Intensive Outpatient Programs can be lifechanging; especially if used to their full potential. Read on for tips for success to help you get the most out of your IOP.

Be Open and Honest

Use this opportunity to share your thoughts, feelings, challenges, and progress truthfully with group members and providers. Honesty helps your therapists and peers understand how they can best support you. Be honest with yourself! What is going well? What do you need to improve? Are you actively engaging and practicing skills and strategies? Being honest with yourself allows you to be accountable so you can meet your goals.

Engage in Sessions

Actively participate in group discussions and complete assignments. A benefit of IOP is the group therapy component. Actively engaging in sessions allows peers to support one another, and allows for processing of your own thoughts and feelings.

Do The Work

Working on your mental health doesn’t just stop when IOP ends for the night; the real work comes in your ability to practice applying your skills and strategies, and learning to change the way you think and act for the better. Complete journal assignments, practice your skills, and come back with questions or feedback on your experience.

Commit to Attending Sessions

Show up to group meetings consistently; even when it’s hard. Routine helps create stability which fosters recovery and growth. Hold yourself accountable and make the most out of each session.

Set Goals (and revisit them)

Think about what you want to get out of IOP. What are your short and long term goals? Share them with your therapists and the group if you’re comfortable as a means of keeping yourself accountable in reaching those goals. Allow yourself to celebrate small wins along the way, and know adjustments can be made along the way.

Have a Plan for What Comes Next

Work with your therapists to develop a plan for yourself when you complete the program. Consider options like weekly therapy, support groups, and sober living if needed. Having a plan in place will prevent any lapse in treatment when you complete the program.

These are just some tips for success in an intensive outpatient program. Take care of yourself, give yourself grace and compassion, and keep looking ahead. We’re here to help if you need us!
