What Programs at Hopewell Are Eligible for CT Paid Leave or FMLA?

At Hopewell Health Solutions we are committed to supporting not only your mental and emotional recovery but also your ability to take necessary time away from work when treatment or life changes demand it. Many of our clients ask whether the programs we offer—like our Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs), Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy, and Spravato® treatment, may qualify for leave under CT Paid Leave or FMLA. Here is how to think about these options.

Understanding CT Paid Leave and FMLA

CT Paid Leave provides eligible workers in Connecticut income replacement when they must take time away from work for certain major life events or their own serious health condition. FMLA provides eligible employees up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave for specified family or medical reasons, including the employee’s own serious health condition.

The key in both cases is whether the health condition or treatment is serious enough to qualify, whether you are eligible based on employment and hours worked, and whether your employer is covered under FMLA or your job qualifies under CT Paid Leave rules.

How Our Programs Fit

  1. Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs)
If you are participating in an IOP because of a mental health condition or co-occurring substance use disorder that affects your ability to work, this may qualify under “serious health condition” for FMLA or CT Paid Leave. The important part is documented treatment by a healthcare provider and that your condition prevents you from performing your job duties or requires a period of incapacity. Your IOP at Hopewell typically involves multiple sessions each week which may meet the “continuing treatment” requirement for a serious health condition.
  2. TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) Therapy
TMS is an evidence-based treatment for depression and other conditions when other treatments have not worked. If you are undergoing TMS and it requires frequent sessions or causes you to miss work while receiving treatment or recovering, it may qualify under leave protections. Documentation from your clinician or prescriber is key to establishing eligibility.
  3. Spravato® (Esketamine) Treatment
Spravato is used for treatment-resistant depression and often involves in-clinic dosing and observation. If your treatment plan requires you to attend sessions and you are unable to perform your job during certain periods (for example due to medication side-effects or required monitoring), you may be eligible for leave using CT Paid Leave or FMLA. Again this depends on having a certified provider document the need and impact.

Steps to Explore Leave for Treatment

  • Talk with Hopewell’s clinical team about your treatment plan and whether your clinician can certify a serious health condition.

  • Notify your employer that you are requesting leave for your own serious health condition or for treatment of a condition that affects your ability to work.

  • Determine whether you qualify for CT Paid Leave (check earnings, employer coverage, qualifying reason) and/or FMLA (check employer size, hours worked, job location) before you apply.

  • Gather documentation from your provider at Hopewell supporting the necessity of your treatment plan, number of sessions, impact on job performance, and estimated timeframe.

  • Keep your employer, your treatment team at Hopewell, and your leave coordinator in communication so that your return-to-work plan is clear and manageable.

Why It Matters

Treatment for mental health and co-occurring disorders is deeply important and should be respected as such. When you are in active treatment via an IOP, TMS, or Spravato, your focus should be on healing, not worrying about losing your job or being unable to cover expenses. When you know your leave options and your treatment team supports you, you can engage more fully in recovery and return to work with restored health and resilience.

At Hopewell Health Solutions in Glastonbury we are here to partner with you through both treatment and the logistics of accessing support at work. If you have questions about whether your program qualifies, speak with your clinician and your employer’s HR department.
