Licensed Clinical Social Worker
“The true inner self must be drawn up like a jewel from the bottom of the sea.” — Thomas Merton
Jonathan Ficara is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who earned his Master of Social Work from the University of Connecticut. He brings a diverse professional background to his clinical work, with experience in outpatient mental health, crisis intervention, higher education, clinical leadership, and pastoral care. Across these settings, he has worked with children, adolescents, young adults, adults, and families navigating emotional, behavioral, relational, and life challenges.
Jonathan has a particular passion for working with individuals moving through periods of transition, uncertainty, and significant change, especially when a crisis, loss, relationship change, or major life experience has disrupted their sense of who they are or where they are going. He specializes in anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use and co-occurring concerns, emotional dysregulation, identity concerns, relationship and family challenges, grief and loss, and significant life transitions. His work often centers on helping individuals understand patterns they have developed to cope, make sense of what they have experienced, reconnect with what matters most, and find deeper and more stable ground from which to move forward.
Jonathan’s clinical approach is grounded primarily in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), with additional training and experience in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), attachment-based approaches, and existential therapy. He helps clients develop greater awareness of their thoughts, emotions, and patterns of behavior while identifying the values and relationships that matter most to them. His work emphasizes psychological flexibility, emotional awareness, values-based decision making, and meaningful action even in the presence of difficult thoughts and emotions.
Jonathan believes therapy is about more than reducing symptoms. At its best, therapy provides a space for people to better understand who they are, what matters to them, and what may be getting in the way of living authentically. He believes each person is more than the difficulties that bring them into treatment and works collaboratively with clients to understand themselves beneath the expectations, roles, and experiences that have shaped them. His background in pastoral care also gives him a particular appreciation for questions of meaning, purpose, faith, and spirituality when these are important to the client.
Outside of his professional life, Jonathan enjoys spending time with his family, staying active through fitness, biking, and running, reading, and spending time outdoors.
