Finding the right psychiatric medication can feel like a frustrating process of guess-and-check. Two people with the same diagnosis can respond very differently to the same prescription — one feels relief within weeks, while the other struggles with side effects or no improvement at all. A large part of that difference comes down to genetics: small variations in your DNA influence how quickly your body breaks medications down and how strongly it responds to them. GeneSight pharmacogenomic testing gives your Hopewell prescriber a window into those variations, so treatment decisions can be guided by your biology rather than by trial-and-error alone.

What GeneSight is

GeneSight is a pharmacogenomic test — "pharmaco" for medication and "genomic" for genes. It analyzes specific genes that play a role in how your body metabolizes and responds to medications commonly used to treat depression, anxiety, ADHD and other mental health conditions. The test does not diagnose anything, and it does not replace your provider's clinical judgment. Instead, it adds one more meaningful data point to the conversation: a report that shows which medications may work as expected for you, which may require dose adjustments, and which may carry a higher chance of side effects based on your genetic profile.

How the test works

The process is quick and completely non-invasive. During a visit, a member of our team collects a DNA sample with a soft cheek swab — there are no needles and no blood draw. That sample is sent to the laboratory, which analyzes the relevant genes and returns a report, usually within a few days. The report organizes medications into easy-to-read categories: those that can generally be used as directed, those that may require closer monitoring or dosing changes, and those that may have a significant gene-drug interaction for you. Your provider then sits down with you to interpret the results in plain language and discuss what they mean for your care.

Who may benefit

GeneSight can be especially helpful if you have tried one or more psychiatric medications without the relief you hoped for, if you've experienced unusual or hard-to-tolerate side effects, or if you are starting medication for the first time and want to make the most informed choice possible. It is often considered for people living with treatment-resistant depression, persistent anxiety, ADHD, or other conditions where finding the right medication has been a long road. Because every situation is different, your prescriber will help you decide whether testing is likely to add value for you specifically.

How we use it at Hopewell

At Hopewell Health Solutions, GeneSight testing is never a standalone product — it's one tool inside a thoughtful, whole-person approach to medication management. Our prescribers combine your genetic results with the things that matter just as much: your symptoms, your history, your goals, your other medications, and your own preferences about treatment. The result is a more personalized, collaborative plan and, for many people, a shorter path to a medication that actually fits. If you're already working with one of our psychiatric providers, ask whether GeneSight testing makes sense as a next step. If you're new to Hopewell, our team can explain the process, check your insurance benefits, and schedule a visit.

Frequently asked questions

What is GeneSight testing?+

GeneSight is a pharmacogenomic (gene + drug) test that analyzes how your genes may influence the way your body processes certain psychiatric medications. The results give your prescriber additional information to consider when choosing or adjusting a medication for depression, anxiety, ADHD and related conditions.

How is the test done?+

It's a simple cheek swab. A clinician rubs a soft swab on the inside of your cheek to collect a DNA sample — there are no needles and no blood draw. The sample is sent to the lab and results are typically available within a few days.

Will GeneSight tell me exactly which medication to take?+

No. GeneSight does not diagnose any condition and it does not decide your treatment. It groups medications into categories based on potential gene-drug interactions, and your Hopewell prescriber uses that information — alongside your symptoms, history and preferences — to make the final clinical decision with you.

Is GeneSight covered by insurance?+

Coverage varies by plan. Many commercial insurers and Medicare cover GeneSight for patients who meet certain criteria. Our team can help you understand your benefits before testing — call (860) 735-1448 and we'll walk you through it.
