Compassionate, trauma-informed care at Hopewell Health Solutions, Connecticut

Stuck in survival mode

What is trauma & PTSD?

Trauma is the emotional response to a deeply distressing or disturbing event — whether a single incident or harm that built up over time. Most people recover with support, but for some, the mind and body stay locked in survival mode long after the danger has passed. When symptoms persist for more than a month and interfere with daily life, it may be post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

PTSD isn’t a sign of weakness, and it isn’t “all in your head” — it’s the nervous system’s response to overwhelming experience, and it’s very treatable. The trauma-informed team at Hopewell Health Solutions uses proven therapies like EMDR, ART, and CPT, along with specialized group programs and medication management, to help you process what happened and feel safe in your life again.

When to seek trauma treatment

Many people live with the effects of trauma for years before reaching out. Consider seeking support when:

Symptoms have lasted more than a month
Memories or reminders disrupt your daily life
You’re avoiding things in order to feel safe
Sleep, mood, or relationships are suffering
You’re using alcohol or substances to cope
The trauma still feels present, even long after

If any of these feel familiar, reach out to the team at Hopewell Health Solutions. You don’t have to relive every detail to heal.

Trauma & PTSD treatment — common questions

What is PTSD?+

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a deeply distressing event — such as an accident, assault, abuse, combat, or a medical crisis. Most people recover from trauma with time and support, but for some, the mind and body stay in survival mode long after the danger has passed. When symptoms last more than a month and interfere with daily life, it may be PTSD. It is not a sign of weakness — it’s the nervous system’s response to overwhelming experience, and it is highly treatable.

What are the signs of trauma or PTSD?+

Common signs include flashbacks, nightmares, or intrusive memories; avoiding people, places, or reminders of what happened; feeling on guard, jumpy, or easily startled; trouble sleeping or concentrating; emotional numbness or feeling detached; irritability or anger; and negative changes in mood, beliefs, or self-worth. Many people also turn to alcohol or substances to cope. Trauma can surface soon after an event or years later.

What is EMDR, and how does it help with trauma?+

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy that helps the brain reprocess painful memories so they lose their emotional charge. Using guided eye movements or other bilateral stimulation, EMDR allows distressing experiences to be 'filed away' properly — so they stop intruding on the present. It’s recognized by the American Psychiatric Association, the World Health Organization, and the Department of Defense, and it often works faster than talk therapy alone.

How is PTSD treated?+

At Hopewell Health Solutions, trauma and PTSD are treated with evidence-based, trauma-informed care. That often includes EMDR, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), delivered at a pace that feels safe, along with medication management when it’s helpful. We also offer specialized group programs — a Women’s Trauma IOP and a First Responder IOP — for those who benefit from healing alongside others with shared experiences. Treatment is always tailored to the individual.

When should I seek help for trauma?+

Reach out when symptoms have lasted more than a month, when memories or reminders disrupt your daily life, when you’re avoiding things to feel safe, or when sleep, mood, or relationships are suffering.
