Joy Burchell, LCSW

Licensed Clinical Social Worker

Joy is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who graduated from Springfield College with a BS in Rehabilitative Services, followed by an MSW at Smith College School of Social Work. Joy has worked in the behavioral health field for over 30 years in a variety of settings. She helped develop a program at the Aetna Foundation Children's Center at St. Francis Hospital, which provides immediate therapy to children disclosing severe physical and sexual abuse in a forensic interview setting. She ran the VIP (Violence Intervention Project), working alongside the Hartford Police Department, responding on-call to scenes where children witness violence and crime. She has worked with multidisciplinary teams to provide children, families, and adults with needed services.

Joy ran her own private practice for over 25 years serving children, adults, couples, and families. She worked with many victims of severe sexual abuse and trauma in the state of Connecticut. Collaborating with several teams and resources, she was able to ensure quality treatment for her clients.

Joy has a strength-based approach, believing that each client brings their own story and ability to heal with care and support. She specializes in trauma and has helped numerous clients manage their lives through CPT (Cognitive Processing Therapy), CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy), psychodynamic therapy, as well as solution-focused techniques. She has helped clients develop healthy coping skills to navigate their symptoms and work through life challenges.

Joy has assisted those beginning their journey in helping others, supervising interns and providing licensed supervision to clinicians seeking licensure. She believes it's very important to support and train professionals in order to provide clients with consistent quality care.

In her spare time, Joy enjoys spending time with her husband, two children, extended family and friends. She enjoys taking cruises, going to sporting events, relaxing at the beach, and long walks with her fur baby.
